Find the deadline first
Before you read anything else, find every date in the notice and write them on a calendar. Deadlines are the part of a notice that cannot be recovered once missed.
Separate the allegation from the requirement
A notice usually states what an agency believes happened and what it wants you to do. These are different, and you can respond to both separately.
Respond in writing, even briefly
A short, dated, factual written response that acknowledges the notice and states your position creates a record. Silence rarely helps.
